I also see the confluence of "reviews" from so many who didn't actually read the book. It's like reading a review of a resaurent from someone who has only seen a picture of one of it's menu items. Underworld swivels and turns faster than our individual junkheap tonage of life and memory. Most of us can't conjure up just how big it all is. DeLillo does. I suggest to those who's opinions outweigh their ability to finish a novel go to Cliff's Notes. Always. Faster and so to the point. Then you have more time in Starbucks to go online and have a publishable opinion. firebrandnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18645047.post-80313403957379281102012-05-05T11:15:53.524-05:002012-05-05T11:15:53.524-05:00try "Nothing special. DeLillo's abrupt changes in setting, characters and time frames repeatedly yanked me away from engaging with his story and its people. To me, "Underworld" feels like a number of short stories in which the effort to combine them into one nearly ruins their individual brilliance.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18645047.post-88057684997859282512011-10-23T17:26:54.231-05:002011-10-23T17:26:54.231-05:00Loved your post. I'm still going to look into Ferber. I totally agree about The Womanly Art. Right now I am reading Your Baby and Child: From Birth to Age Five, and I love it. I can literally watch Evelyn go through the various milestones, and it helps me know what to look for. It was given to me by Aaron's step-mom who had twins. I find it very comprehensive, plus the 80's baby pictures are fun.K. This man also routinely made house calls. And his first visit to our little apartment was a get acquainted call that he initiated. He wrote a monthly newsletter called Uncommon Sense with truly helpful information, some of it contrary to the party line of the day.

As for judging others based on my own limited experience, it's taken me a while to put a damper on that routine. I like the old saying about walking a mile in their moccasins. Currently I'm having a great time in some "moccasins" I never tried before. I am thoroughly enjoying the adrenalin-junkie world of the fire and rescue boys and girls, where we, yes we, actually look forward to that radio popping and calling us out onto the street.

And now that I'm one full week into an EMT course (medical terminology), I am discovering what it feels like to try to get a grip on an impossible amount of information in a very short time. I keep telling her that elk and raccoons will trample and devour anything that might actually grow at 8000 ft (well I guess we actually are quite a bit below the tree line) where we have a growing season mostly suited to radishes, and, and, . . . She persists. After all Pluto was in charge of Hades. I don't think we should mess with him by dissing his planet. All hell could break loose, assuming it hasn't frozen over since Pluto is so far from the sun.

If Pluto isn't a planet any longer does that mean we have to rename Plutonium?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06546840413431176072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18645047.post-73484368027688616202009-06-13T18:56:38.469-05:002009-06-13T18:56:38.469-05:00Your initial instincts were right. There are stron...Your initial instincts were right. There are strong scientific reasons for keeping Pluto classified as a planet. It is important to note that Tyson has distanced himself from the controversial 2006 IAU decision, which he himself admits is flawed. At this point, he even admits that the debate is not over, that it might be too early in the study of planetary scientists for anyone to be defining what a planet is in the first place. This was pretty much his message at the Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate, which he moderated at the American Museum of Natural History on March 10, 2009.

Significantly, only four percent of the IAU voted on Pluto's demotion, and most are not planetary scientists. Their decision was immediately rejected by hundreds of professional astronomers led by Dr. Alan Stern, Principal Investigator of NASA's New Horizons mission to Pluto.

Stern and like-minded scientists favor a broader planet definition that includes any non-self-luminous spheroidal body in orbit around a star. The spherical part is important because objects become spherical when they attain a state known as hydrostatic equilibrium, meaning they are large enough for their own gravity to pull them into a round shape. This is a characteristic of planets and not of shapeless asteroids and Kuiper Belt Objects. Pluto meets this criterion and is therefore a planet, as are Haumea, Makemake and Eris in the Kuiper Belt and Ceres in the asteroid belt. This characteristic differentiates these bodies from the many others in those belts.

This debate is far from over. For another perspective, anyone interested in this topic should read "Is Pluto A Planet" by Dr. David Weintraub. Also, please visit my Pluto blog, which discusses the scientific reasons for Pluto maintaining its planet status and chronicles worldwide efforts to overturn the demotion, at http://laurele.livejournal.com

Alan Boyle is writing a book "The Case for Pluto," which will be out in October 2009, and I also plan on writing a book about Pluto, which will be out sometime in the next few years. Please make sure to consider both sides before taking a stand on this issue.Laurel Kornfeldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02387883186244337619noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18645047.post-57141032931037693632009-06-04T16:34:11.457-05:002009-06-04T16:34:11.457-05:00"once you put the plate in front of your chil..."once you put the plate in front of your child, your work is done."
